Biography

Donald Sutherland was a Canadian actor whose screen career spanned six decades, from war films to horror and science fiction. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, he trained in Britain and worked in West End and repertory theater before taking small parts in British films and television. He rose to fame with The Dirty Dozen (1967) and the war comedies MASH (1970) and Kelly's Heroes (1970). Leading roles followed in Klute (1971), Don't Look Now (1973), which brought a BAFTA nomination, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), and Ordinary People (1980), the last earning him a Golden Globe nomination. Later films included The Italian Job (2003), Cold Mountain (2003), Space Cowboys (2000), and Pride & Prejudice (2005). From 2012 to 2015 he played President Snow across The Hunger Games franchise. On television, Citizen X (1995) won him a Primetime Emmy Award and Path to War (2002) a Golden Globe. In 2017 he was given an Academy Honorary Award.

Sutherland dropped out of LAMDA in his first year and spent 18 months acting at the Perth Repertory Theatre in Scotland, playing Heracles in Benn Levy's The Rape of the Belt.
Behind the award
Sutherland's 2017 Academy Honorary Award, given for a lifetime of indelible characters, was the only Academy Award of his six-decade film career.
