Plot summary
Metro City floats above a polluted Earth in the 22nd century, and robots there serve humankind. Dr. Tenma and Dr. Elefun work at the Ministry of Science, where President Stone, campaigning for re-election, orders the Peacekeeper, a defense robot fueled by two energy spheres from a star fragment. Stone ignores the scientists' warnings and loads the red core; the machine turns hostile and Toby, Tenma's son, is killed. Tenma builds a robot carrying Toby's memories and defenses that include flight. Powered by the blue core, the robot wakes believing he is Toby, but Tenma rejects him. Stone's forces chase the boy to recover the blue core, and he falls from Metro City's edge into the junkyard below, where he meets orphaned children and the Robot Revolutionary Front, who rename him Astro.

- Sony Pictures bought the film rights in 1997 for a live-action Astro Boy, with Todd Alcott set to write, but the project halted in 2000 when Steven Spielberg began A.I. Artificial Intelligence, another film about a robot boy who replaces a dead child.
- Before the film's release, Imagi chairman and CEO Francis Kao stepped down, partly over his disapproval of the marketing budget, saying he knew the movie would be bad the moment he saw the poster.
- Astro's design was reworked for a Western audience and for CGI; the hardest part was his kawaii look, including large eyes and curly eyelashes that the filmmakers thought made him too feminine.
- In China, Astro Boy broke a box-office record for a CGI-animated film, following Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Speed Racer, other American films from Japanese sources that were not big hits at home but did very well in China.
