Plot summary

Rescued from the destroyed arena of the 75th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen is taken to District 13, an underground district cut off from the rest of Panem and home to the growing rebellion. Its leader, President Alma Coin, tells her that her arrow shattering the arena forcefield set off riots in more than half the districts, and that President Snow answered by bombing District 12. Coin wants Katniss to serve as the Mockingjay, the symbol of the revolt, a role Katniss rejects. Taken to the ruins of District 12, she finds her old house untouched and white roses from Snow inside. When Peeta Mellark appears on state television urging the districts to surrender, she agrees to become the Mockingjay, on condition that Peeta and the other captured victors are rescued and pardoned.
