Plot summary
Ethan Powell is an anthropologist who spent years living among mountain gorillas in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Nearly two years after he went missing in Africa, he is caught committing a crime and imprisoned in a Florida institution for the criminally insane, convicted of killing and injuring a number of supposed Wilderness Park Rangers in East Africa. Theo Caulder, an aspiring psychiatrist, takes over the case. He wants to learn why the killings happened, and also how Powell became the man he now is. Powell does not speak at all and gives no account of his years away, and getting through to him falls to Caulder.

- The story was very loosely based on Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael, and in the United States the production was known under the working title Ishmael before release.

- Director Wolfgang Petersen originally intended to direct the film himself, but stepped back to serve instead as executive producer alongside his producing partner Gail Katz.
