SPOILER
20th Century Fox executives removed many of Whedon's jokes as too abstract and turned his darker script into a light-hearted B-movie comedy. Merrick was killed protecting Buffy instead of committing suicide after being bitten by Lothos, and the original ending, in which Buffy burns down her school gym, was cut.- Whedon has been highly critical of Donald Sutherland's behavior on set, describing him as entitled and difficult. Sutherland liked to improvise or alter his lines, which director Rubel Kuzui let him do freely as the film's most high-profile star, and Whedon felt it made Merrick's dialogue disjointed and unintelligible.
- Annoyed by his loss of creative control over the movie, Whedon wrote and produced a television series of the same name five years later, changing Buffy from a high-school senior to a sophomore and giving her a caring, newly divorced mother, Joyce, and later a younger sister, Dawn.
