Plot summary
As a child, Brian McCaffrey watched his father, Captain Dennis McCaffrey, die on a call. He tried firefighting, quit, left town and spent a few years at other jobs. Now he is back at Engine 17, under his brother Stephen, a lieutenant who doubts he is fit for the job. John "Axe" Adcox, the station's longest-serving man, served under their father, and he grows worried about Stephen's unorthodox methods, as does Stephen's wife Helen, who has separated from him. After a newspaper photo hails Brian as a hero for what was a mistake, Alderman Marty Swayzak offers him a post assisting arson investigator Donald "Shadow" Rimgale, who is working unusual fires in which someone has died. Brian refuses at first, then takes it after another argument with Stephen.
