Plot summary
Two American agents in Paris try to help a Russian athlete come over to the West, and the operation collapses. Two KGB men are killed by mistake. To head off a reprisal, the CIA's chief in Paris and his Soviet opposite number agree that two American agents will be killed in exchange. The men picked are Bruland, who takes the job seriously and is climbing inside the agency, and Griff, a courier with little faith left in the work. Once the two learn of the trade, they set aside their differences and go on the run, pursued by their own agency, the KGB, the Chinese Communists and terrorists who want the CIA destroyed.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- John Scott wrote a contemporary, rhythm-oriented caper score for the film using a small orchestra, but it was replaced by one from Jerry Goldsmith; Scott said the Americans wanted something else.
- The asterisks in the title were put there to remind viewers of MASH, which also starred Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland and is usually written with the same asterisks; apart from that the two films are unconnected.
