Plot summary

The art critic James Figueras is approached by Joseph Cassidy, a wealthy collector, with a proposition. The reclusive painter Jerome Debney lives on Cassidy's estate, and nobody has gotten an interview with him in 50 years. If Figueras procures a Debney painting by whatever means, Cassidy will arrange the interview and lend his influence to Figueras's career. Figueras takes the errand on. The canvas is a rare painting by an artist who has kept to himself for decades, and getting it becomes an obsession for Figueras that his own greed and insecurity feed.
