Plot summary
In Hertfordshire, Mr. Bennet and his wife have five daughters whose prospects rest on marriage: the estate is entailed to a male cousin, and the family would be left with nothing. When the wealthy Charles Bingley rents Netherfield Hall, Mrs. Bennet hopes he will choose one of the girls. Bingley and Jane Bennet are drawn to each other, but his friend Mr. Darcy makes a poor impression, and Elizabeth Bennet overhears his dismissive remark about her. Their cousin Mr. Collins, a clergyman, arrives at Longbourn intending to find a wife among the sisters. A militia officer, George Wickham, tells Elizabeth an account that deepens her dislike of Darcy.

- Wright convinced Judi Dench to join the cast as Lady Catherine de Bourgh by writing her a letter that read: I love it when you play a bitch, please come and be a bitch for me. Dench had only one week available, forcing Wright to shoot her scenes on his first days of filming.

Shortly before the North American release, a final scene not in the novel was added, showing the married Darcys enjoying a romantic evening and a passionate kiss at Pemberley, to attract sentimental viewers. Former Jane Austen Society of North America president Elsa Solender said it had nothing of Jane Austen in it and ought to be cut.- Visual effects company Double Negative digitally restored several of the locations to make them contemporaneous, eradicating weeds, enhancing the gold plating on window frames and removing anachronisms such as gravel driveways and electricity pylons.
- Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, the largest privately held country house in England, with rooms frescoed by Antonio Verrio, stood in for Pemberley along with Wilton House in Salisbury. Many believe Chatsworth was Austen's own inspiration for Pemberley.
- Tamzin Merchant appeared as Georgiana Darcy, hired despite having no previous acting experience at all, after she wrote a letter to the film's casting director.
