Plot summary
Arthur Bishop takes contract work from an employer named Dean, and every hit he makes is arranged to pass for an accident, a suicide or the act of a small-time criminal. The trade requires detachment, and he works alone. After a job abroad he returns home to Louisiana and visits Harry McKenna, the mentor and friend who trained him. Harry is murdered. At the funeral Bishop meets Harry's estranged son Steve, who wants the killers dead and asks Bishop to teach him the trade. Bishop takes him on.
