Plot summary
Katniss Everdeen hunts in the woods beyond District 12 to feed her mother and younger sister Primrose. Panem, a nation of twelve districts ruled by its Capitol, holds the Hunger Games every year as punishment for a rebellion: each district sends two tributes, a boy and a girl between twelve and eighteen, into an arena to fight until one survives, and the event is televised. At the reaping for the 74th Games, Primrose is chosen, and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Peeta Mellark, the baker's son, is the other District 12 tribute. Haymitch Abernathy, the district's only living victor, tells them that sponsors matter, because they can supply resources during the Games.

- Lionsgate had not turned a profit in five years when it took on the film, so the studio raided the budgets of other productions and sold assets to scrape together an $88 million budget, on top of which author Suzanne Collins's agent said the studio "had everyone but the valet call us" to help land the franchise.
- The film was banned in Vietnam after its national film board unanimously judged it too violent, indefinitely delaying what was meant to be its March 30, 2012 release there.
- Lionsgate confirmed in March 2011 that about 30 actresses auditioned or read for the role of Katniss Everdeen, among them Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Emma Roberts, Saoirse Ronan, Chloë Grace Moretz and Shailene Woodley.
- John C. Reilly was in talks with Lionsgate to play Haymitch Abernathy in April 2011 before the studio announced the role had gone to Woody Harrelson, who initially passed on it until Ross called him up and convinced him to accept.
- Lawrence, a fan of the books, was originally intimidated by the size of the production and took three days to accept the role. The producers wanted her to lose weight for it, but she refused, as she did not want to become a bad role model for young girls.
- Lawrence underwent extensive training for the role, including archery, rock and tree climbing, combat, running, parkour and yoga, and on the last day of her six-week training phase she hit a wall while running at full speed, though she was not seriously injured.
