Plot summary
Jim Hawkins is twelve years old and lives in Grey Rocks, Nova Scotia, in 1952. The town was a favored port of pirates two hundred and fifty years before. Jim's father has died, and his mother Kerstin runs the local inn, which a wealthy family is pressing to take over. At school, Jim is bullied. A storm drives a small sailboat off its course, and its owner, Captain Charles Johnson, comes ashore in Grey Rocks. The Captain becomes a friend and mentor to the boy, giving him lessons in self-reliance and determination, and Jim's new self-assurance touches the Captain in return.
