Plot summary
The Morning Rose carries scientists from several nations to Bear Island, in the Arctic, where the United Nations expedition is to study climate change. The German scientists Gerran and his deputy Hartman lead the group, which includes the Norwegian psychiatrist Lindquist and the Pole Lechinski. American biologist Frank Lansing comes aboard, reunited with his friend Smithy and his former colleague Rubin, and soon finds that someone has searched his belongings. On the island, which holds a NATO base and a former U-boat station, the expedition learns that a man named Larsen is missing. Gerran forbids anyone to enter the old U-boat base, but Lansing keeps his attention on it: his father had commanded a U-boat and died on the island.

- Second unit head Vic Armstrong, director Don Sharp and three others were stranded in a helicopter on a mountain location scout for four days, without food or proper clothing, surviving by eating the pilot's lunch; when they returned, six feet of snow fell overnight and a week's filming was lost.
- The shoot was also marked by tragedy when helicopter pilot John Soutar was killed in an accident later on during production.
- A Soviet ship carried the unit to location; hired for three weeks, it was needed an extra week because of bad weather, at $6,000 a day. The film's cast and crew of 103 worked alongside 101 Russian crewmembers, 66 of them women.
- When the film was announced in November 1978, it was set to be the most expensive production ever made in Canada, with a budget of over $9 million.
- Bear Island ran a million dollars over budget, which director Don Sharp said was the first time that had happened in his career.
- The Bank of Montreal lent the producers money for the film, and when they could not raise finance, the bank was forced to become an investor.
