Plot summary
A retrospective portrait of the actor and director, built from film clips, interviews and archival material. Each period of his life is matched to a stage in the ideas his films explore, beginning with his childhood in Depression-era Northern California and continuing through his years as a western star, a San Francisco cop and an astronaut. His career has followed a pattern of alternation, rarely repeating a genre, a tone or a character in consecutive films. The portrait also covers his move from acting into directing and the studio agreement that let him make his directing debut, a decision treated as one of the make-or-break moments of a Hollywood career.
