Plot summary
Bob Garvin, the founder of the Seattle technology company DigiCom, plans to retire after a merger with a textbook publisher, and Tom Sanders, who runs manufacturing, expects to take over. The post instead goes to Meredith Johnson, his former girlfriend. She calls Tom to her office about problems on a new CD-ROM drive line and makes advances toward him. He refuses her and leaves. The next morning, with the help of legal counsel Philip Blackburn, Meredith files a sexual harassment complaint against Tom. DigiCom officials, hoping to keep the merger from becoming a scandal, want him to accept a transfer to Texas. An anonymous e-mail from a sender who calls himself A Friend points Tom to Catherine Alvarez, a lawyer who handles harassment cases, and he decides to sue the company.
