Plot summary
Karen Braswell is a single mother who waits tables, and her life has worn her down. Twenty years ago her testimony convicted her father, Frank, of killing her mother, and she has never stopped believing he was guilty, though the details of that traumatic event will not come back to her. Frank has always said he was innocent, and parole has now freed him. He works at making himself welcome to her young son and to her lover. Karen confronts him in anger, but his charm wears the anger away. Her father tells her that her memory is wrong, that her mother died by accident.
