Plot summary
Alan Johnson has a dental practice, a wife named Janeane and children, and no one he can talk to about how much the two roles ask of him. Charlie Fineman once had a job and a family; after his wife and daughters were killed on September 11, he stopped working and shut himself away. Five years later the two former college roommates meet again on a Manhattan street. Charlie, who wears a headset everywhere and lets music drown out any mention of his family, pulls Alan into long nights of video games and movie marathons. Alan's wife grows tired of his absences, Charlie's in-laws Jonathan and Ginger Timpleman worry that he has erased the tragedy from his mind, and a former patient falsely accuses Alan of assault.
