Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Virus (1999)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Universal turned down Chuck Pfarrer's Virus screenplay, so he took the idea to Mike Richardson at Dark Horse Comics. The four-issue miniseries sold 100,000 copies an issue, and when Pfarrer returned with producer Gale Anne Hurd the studio was suddenly keen.
- Director John Bruno disliked Pfarrer's script and nearly passed. Diving to the Titanic wreck with James Cameron aboard the Russian ship Akademik Mstislav Keldysh gave him his angle: make the derelict vessel Russian rather than Chinese and build a hurricane into the plot.
- The open ocean was faked in the James River at Newport News, Virginia: a horizontal bar on the ship was raised and lowered to hide the horizon line so the vessel appeared to be far out at sea.
- Several lines in Virus were improvised. The crewman Richie's blunt outburst about the state of the ship's antenna was simply the actor reacting to how battered the real Vandenberg looked.
