Plot summary
In 1928 in Pennsylvania, sixteen-year-old Billy Kelly meets John Reese, a traveling doctor of powwow medicine who says he is a messenger of God. Billy falls under the man's spell, and he is torn between Reese and Alice Spangler, the young woman he loves. The film is based on a true story, a killing that happened in 1928 in York, Pennsylvania. Principal photography began in Bergen, Norway, in September 1986, and the whole film was shot in Norway with Norwegian money. Shooting was meant to wrap in early November 1986, but the production was still in Norway later that month. The working title came from the name of a famous powwow book.
