Plot summary
The events come from a real case in the North-West Territories in the 1890s, after the North-West Rebellion, and the story unfolds in Saskatchewan. Almighty Voice, a young Woods Cree man, is taken into custody by the North-West Mounted Police. He hears remarks from Sergeant Dan Candy while he is held, and he breaks out. Candy is rough-hewn and rural, no model of the upright, scrupulously fair Mountie his colleague Sergeant Malcolm Grant is. Sounding Sky is the father of Almighty Voice, and parts of the telling are in the Cree language. Because the escape follows on remarks he made, Candy carries the blame for it and sets out after Almighty Voice.

- The first version of the screenplay was written by W. O. Mitchell, a noted Saskatchewan author, but he asked that his name not be used on the finished film after changes were made at Sutherland's request, reportedly saying: "It's just not mine anymore."
- The RCMP had seen the film as a centrepiece of its 1973 centennial celebrations, but it withdrew its backing and asked that its name not be used in any promotional materials.
- Donald Sutherland and Francine Racette, who plays the widow of Sergeant Grant, met on the filming of the movie and married after it was completed.
- The movie is based on a true story from the North-West Territories in the 1890s after the North-West Rebellion, with the young Woods Cree man Almighty Voice played by Gordon Tootoosis in his first film role.
