Plot summary
In 1958, Frank Corvin and Hawk Hawkins are U.S. Air Force pilots who hope to become astronauts, and they test a modified Bell X-2. Jerry O'Neill is a flight engineer and Tank Sullivan a navigator; the four belong to Project Daedalus, the Air Force's program for space travel. Their boss, Bob Gerson, then announces that the newly created NASA will run spaceflight instead of the Air Force. In the present, IKON, a Soviet communications satellite, is drifting out of orbit and could crash to Earth. Its old electronics copy systems Frank designed for Skylab, so Bob, now a NASA project manager, asks Frank for help. Frank agrees only if Hawk, Jerry and Tank join him. Younger astronauts are picked to shadow the four before launch, and press attention puts the team on the mission.
