Plot summary
Hazel Micallef serves as a police officer in a small Ontario town. She is sent to check on elderly Delia Chandler and finds the woman in her living room, nearly decapitated, her mouth twisted as if screaming. Another victim follows, a man whose stomach has been fed to dogs. After a third murder the police believe a serial killer is at work, and the victims' mouths spell syllables of the Latin word Líbera. Micallef asks Father Price, a priest who specializes in Latin, to explain the term.
