Plot summary
The managing director of a preeminent auction house, Virgil Oldman lives alone, wearing gloves at all times except when he handles art. With his friend Billy Whistler he acquires female portraits cheaply, then keeps the paintings in a private vault. Claire Ibbetson, a young heiress with severe agoraphobia, hires him to appraise and sell the art and antiques her late parents left in their villa. She will not meet him in person, speaking by telephone and leaving notes with Fred, the caretaker. Virgil finds scattered mechanical parts marked by the inventor Jacques de Vaucanson and asks Robert, a young restorer, to reassemble them. Robert also advises him on how to reach Claire.
