Plot summary
Billy Bones, once first mate to the pirate Captain Flint, dies at the Admiral Benbow inn, kept by the recently widowed Meg Hawkins and her son Jim. Among the boy's discoveries is a map to the island where Flint buried his treasure. Squire John Trelawney leads an expedition to find it, Captain Smollett commands the Hispaniola, and Dr. David Livesey serves as the ship's doctor, with Jim aboard as cabin boy. The cook is Long John Silver, Flint's former quartermaster, and his wife Alibe has taken refuge at the inn from Black Dog and befriends Meg. Other men aboard sailed with Flint before, and Silver lost his leg when Flint fired a cannon at his crew.

SPOILER
This adaptation rewrites Long John Silver's past: Eddie Izzard's Silver, formerly Captain Flint's quartermaster, loses his leg after Flint fires a cannon at his own crew to get them off the ship.- The character of Redruth is remade for this version. In the book, Tom Redruth was Trelawney's elderly gamekeeper who joined the expedition and was killed; here, played by Julian Barratt, he is Trelawney's ruthless agent who remains in England and repossesses the Admiral Benbow from Meg Hawkins.
