Plot summary
Ouisa and Flan Kittredge are private art dealers in New York. They own a Kandinsky painted on both sides, one face standing for control and the other for chaos. One evening the couple is entertaining Geoffrey Miller, an investor whose backing could make them far richer, when a young man turns up at their door. He is Paul Poitier, newly arrived in the city, robbed outside the building and bleeding from a small knife wound in his stomach. He says he knows their children at Harvard and that his father, Sidney Poitier, is in town directing a film of Cats. The Kittredges dress his wound and offer him a bed, taken with his charm, his taste, his talk about books and his cooking.

- The plot was inspired by the real-life story of David Hampton, a con man and robber who convinced a number of people in the 1980s that he was the son of actor Sidney Poitier; in October 1983 he came to a New York couple's apartment and was allowed to spend the night.
- Smith refused to perform the scene in which Trent and Paul kissed, as he did not know what his friends would think, so a stand-in actor was used instead.
- The couple who let Hampton spend the night told their friend, the writer John Guare, the story, and it inspired him to write the play years later.
