Plot summary
John Mason, called Cincinnati John though he says he has never been to Cincinnati, travels to Promise, Wyoming, in 1883 to see his father. The older man is not pleased to see him, and the two have only a short time together before a gang of masked robbers stealing the mail shoots him dead. Mason wants the robbers found. His friend Rudd needs five thousand dollars to keep his ranch and puts the ranch ahead of his sister Alice. The bounty hunter Cochrane is after Mason. A railway payroll due to be carried from Promise to the railroad could draw the gang out, and might also help Rudd.
