Plot summary
Patricia Carroll, an American, travels to England to marry Alan Glentower. Before the wedding she makes a call on Mrs. Trefoile, the mother of Stephen, the fiancé she lost years before in an automobile accident. The older woman lives in a secluded house at the edge of an English village and keeps a fanatical religious faith. It becomes clear to Patricia that Mrs. Trefoile blames her for Stephen's death. When Patricia tells her that she had never meant to marry Stephen, Mrs. Trefoile turns to her servants, Harry and Anna, to hold the young woman captive while she exorcises her soul.
