Plot summary
Weslake, laid off from his job, works for little pay at Garvey's pawn shop in San Francisco. Dillard, an amateur musician, and Ramon, who came from Mexico and lives with his sister Maria, arrive to buy back a guitar Dillard pawned, offering a stolen car radio that Garvey rejects. Garvey proposes another deal: Dillard, an electrician, should install an alarm system in the shop. Ramon talks him into it, arguing that with the alarm in place Garvey may trust the shop enough to leave it, giving the two a chance to break in and take the guitar back. Boardwalk, a pimp whose girlfriend has just left him, overhears and tells Weslake he should report the plan to Garvey. Weslake keeps quiet, since an alarm may mean Garvey no longer needs him.
