Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Cold Mountain (2003)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Walter Murch edited the film on Apple's sub-$1000 Final Cut Pro software "using several off-the-shelf PowerMac G4 computers", where expensive Avid systems were the usual standard for a big-budget picture. His work was documented in the 2005 book Behind the Seen.
- Principal photography started on July 10, 2002, but MGM pulled out in October. Executive producer Harvey Weinstein was going to cancel the shoot, then agreed to fund the $80 million project after receiving a $10 million tax break.
- Tom Cruise, at the time married to star Nicole Kidman, wanted to play Inman, but the studio did not want to meet his $20 million fee demand.
- The film was shot mostly in Romania, one of a growing number of Hollywood productions made in Eastern Europe, because Transylvania had less infrastructure, such as power cables and paved roads, and was less marked by modern life than the Appalachians.
- Historians have picked at the film's opening Battle of the Crater, which is shown happening in broad daylight although it actually began at 4:44 am with the detonation of the mine.
