Plot summary
John Henry Clayton has spent ten years drifting since the Civil War. He comes back to his hometown and finds his father, Reverend Samuel Clayton, who tells him that his mother died some years earlier. The two men are estranged, because Samuel is ashamed of the violence he believes his son committed after the war. In town, Samuel warns him away from a group of suspicious men whose leader, the saloon owner James McCurdy, fears John Henry will cause trouble. John Henry also meets Mary Alice, his former love, and learns she has a husband and a son.

- Donald Sutherland and his son Kiefer had already appeared in two films together, Max Dugan Returns (1983) and A Time to Kill (1996), but never shared a scene; Kiefer commissioned Brad Mirman to write Forsaken so the two could finally act opposite each other, with Jon Cassar directing.
- Forsaken's production companies, including Kiefer Sutherland's Camel Entertainment, were barred by the Alberta Labour Relations Board from about $1.7-million in Alberta Film Grant money until workers and suppliers were paid; roughly 100 crew members were owed $300,000, and some actors were paid in June 2015.
