Plot summary
John and Laura Baxter lose their young daughter Christine in a drowning accident at their English country home. A bishop has commissioned John to restore an ancient church in Venice, and the couple travel there, having placed their son Johnny in boarding school. Laura has not recovered from the grief. In a restaurant she helps an elderly woman whose eye has been caught by dust, and the woman's blind sister, Heather, introduces herself as a clairvoyant. Heather says she can see Christine, that the girl is happy and nearby, and that John shares this sensitivity. She warns that John is in danger and should leave the city. Laura finds the reassurance a comfort; John remains skeptical of the old woman's claims.

- When the stuntman refused to perform the stunt because the insurance was not in order, Donald Sutherland did it himself on a kirby wire; stunt co-ordinator Vic Armstrong later told him the wire was not designed for that and would have snapped.
- The film's love scene was an unscripted, last-minute improvisation by Nicolas Roeg, who felt that without it there would be too many scenes of the couple arguing.
- Michael Deeley, who oversaw the film's UK distribution, said Warren Beatty had flown to London and demanded the sex scene featuring his then girlfriend Julie Christie be cut; in 2011 former Paramount executive Peter Bart wrote that he was on set and the scene was not simulated.
- Casting director Ugo Mariotti spotted Pino Donaggio on a vaporetto on the Grand Canal in Venice and, believing it to be a “sign”, asked him to work on the film; Donaggio was reluctant because he had no experience of scoring films.
- The fleeting red-coated figure was played by Adelina Poerio, who stood only 4'2" tall and had a career as a singer; Nicolas Roeg cast her after seeing her photo at a casting session in Rome.
- Real-life couple Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner were suggested for the parts of Laura and John Baxter, but Roeg was eager to cast Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland from the very start, and both unexpectedly became available.
- Renato Scarpa was cast as Inspector Longhi despite not being able to speak English, so he had no idea what he was saying in the film.
