Plot summary

Susannah Kelton, raised in city foster care, is a newly married woman when she discovers that her real parents have died, leaving her their property on Dunwich, an island off the Massachusetts coast. The mill there stands abandoned. Susannah and Mike, her husband, go to the island to inspect what she has inherited. The islanders are clannish, and the few who befriend the couple include Susannah's aunt Agatha, who says the mill is cursed and tells them to leave at once. Susannah and Mike dismiss the warnings as superstition and consider rebuilding the old mill, which puts them in the path of a gang of local thugs under her cousin Ethan.

Ken Russell was originally attached to direct The Shuttered Room, but he was replaced shortly before filming began, and the cast only learned of the swap the day before shooting started.
On his first day on The Shuttered Room, director David Greene told the cast to ignore the script and "make this up as we go along", leaving each actor responsible for their own dialogue.
Though the film is set on the Massachusetts island of Dunwich, it was shot in England: Hollowshore Boatyard and The Shipwright's Arms in Faversham, Kent doubled as the town, and South Foreland Lighthouse in Dover stood in for Aunt Agatha's home.
The large half-brick, half-timber watermill burned in the film's closing scenes was played by Hardingham Mill on the River Yare in Norfolk.
The dialogue of William Devlin in The Shuttered Room was redubbed by Donald Sutherland, who went uncredited for the work.
