Plot summary
In the Soviet Union in 1982, workers harvesting on a collective farm find a body, and forensic specialist Viktor Burakov authorizes a search of the adjacent woods, which uncovers seven more. Promoted to detective, Burakov spends eight years pursuing the person who mutilated and killed more than fifty people, most of them young. Col. Mikhail Fetisov, his commanding officer, aids the inquiry, at first quietly, and the psychiatrist Alexandr Bukhanovsky, a student of what he calls abnormal psychology, is brought into the case. Because serial murder is associated with decadent Western morality, officials fear the effect on the country's image and keep the killings out of the press, while bureaucracy slows the detectives.
