Biography

Brian Cox is a Scottish actor who trained as a Shakespearean performer and became known for character roles in film and television. Born in Dundee, he started at the Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1961 and was a founding member of the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh. He won Laurence Olivier Awards for his stage work in Rat in the Skull and Titus Andronicus, and later an Emmy for playing Hermann Göring in Nuremberg (2001). On screen he appeared in Manhunter (1986), Braveheart (1995), The Bourne Identity (2002), Troy (2004) and Match Point (2005), among many others. He earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for L.I.E. (2001). From 2018 to 2023 he starred as Logan Roy in Succession, winning a Golden Globe. He also appeared in The Ring (2002) and in Churchill (2017) as Winston Churchill.

    Brian Cox launched his acting career at Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1961, when he was 14. Later he helped found the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and acted in its opening production, The Servant O' Twa Maisters, in October 1965.

    In 1986, Brian Cox took the role of Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter, which was the first time the character appeared on film.

    Cox spent a few years at Dundee Repertory Theatre, then at 17 he started training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he graduated in 1965.
