Plot summary
Samantha Caine teaches school in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, the small town where she lives with Caitlin, her daughter, and Hal, her boyfriend. She was found eight years ago on a beach in New Jersey, pregnant, and remembered nothing of her name or her life. Several private investigators have failed to trace it, and the newest of them is Mitch Henessey. During the Christmas season a car crash leaves her with a mild concussion, and she handles a knife with a skill she cannot explain. A convict called One-Eyed Jack, who had escaped from jail, broke in after seeing her face on television, and she fought him off bare-handed. Fearing for Hal and Caitlin, she leaves town with Mitch, who has turned up a suitcase that appears to be hers, to look for answers.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- During filming in February 1996, a real fire destroyed most of the 127-year-old Windermere House in Ontario where a scene was being shot, leaving only the stone verandah standing; the film crew helped evacuate nearby homes.
- In 1994, New Line Cinema paid a then-record $4 million for Shane Black's script, the highest price paid for a screenplay at that point.
- Screenwriter Shane Black wondered whether the film would have done better with a male lead: “It might have made more money, they told me, but it had to be a woman. The lead had to be female.”
- It has been suggested that the film's poor advertising campaign and lukewarm critical reception were a carry-over effect from Renny Harlin and Geena Davis's previous collaboration, Cutthroat Island, released ten months earlier and one of the biggest box office bombs of all time.
SPOILER
An early cut of the film killed off Samuel L. Jackson's character Mitch Henessey, but director Renny Harlin rewrote the ending to let him survive after a test-screening audience member shouted, 'You can't kill Sam Jackson!'
