Plot summary

Jeff Vahn is an illustrator whose career is failing and whose divorce from Maggie is final. She is seeking sole custody of Jenny, their daughter, and he is distraught at the thought of losing her. During an argument on the phone with Maggie, she is struck and killed by a hit and run driver. After her funeral, Maggie's father, Paul Rivers, prepares a custody case against Jeff, and Jenny grows depressed and begins acting strangely. Jeff cannot comfort her. Through an old friend he takes a small job at a comic book company, and Jenny's babysitter, Samantha Nally, looks after her full-time while he works. Jeff has nightmares of spirits around the house and falls into trances, drawing creatures that the spirits bring to life.
