Plot summary

In a Balkan city-state that calls itself Rome, grain stores are withheld and civil liberties reduced while war continues with neighboring Volsci. Hungry citizens riot, and their anger fixes on Caius Martius, a Roman general who makes plain his contempt for them. The Volscian commander Tullus Aufidius, who has fought Martius before and counts him a mortal enemy, swears their next meeting in battle will be his last. Martius leads a raid on the Volscian city of Corioles, where much of his unit dies before reinforcements take the city. Martius and Aufidius then meet in single combat and both are wounded. Back in Rome, General Cominius gives Martius the name Coriolanus for his courage, and his mother Volumnia urges him to run for consul. Two tribunes, Brutus and Sicinius, fear his popularity and scheme against him.
