Plot summary
Karol Wojtyła grows up in Wadowice, Poland, and takes part in political efforts against Nazism during World War II. The film follows his family and his involvement with the Roman Catholic Church, and it opens in 1978 on the death of Pope John Paul I. Its timeline moves between Wojtyła's early years and the 1978 dates that fall before October 16.

- Producer Alvin Cooperman won permission to shoot in Yugoslavia, with Zagreb doubling for Kraków, but three days before filming began the government rescinded it, confiscated footage already shot and barred the crew over the script's anti-Communist overtones; the film was shot in Austria and Italy instead.
- Albert Finney initially declined the role of Karol Wojtyła, whom he played from age 27, because playing someone so high-profile would be unnerving; he accepted after re-reading the script.
- With help from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, executive producer Alvin Cooperman sought Vatican approval for the project, and after reviewing the script the Vatican welcomed it.
