Plot summary
In Spurbury, Vermont, four state troopers patrol a 50-mile stretch of highway and treat the job as a playground, pulling pranks on motorists and on Farva, a loud fellow trooper pulled off road duty. Captain John O'Hagen commands the barracks, and Bruce Grady, the Spurbury police chief, hopes to force their station closed to win more funding for his own department. Called to an abandoned Winnebago, the troopers and the local police find a woman's body inside, and a traffic stop later turns up a shipment of marijuana. Grady dismisses any link between the two and refuses O'Hagen's suggestion that the departments work together. Foster takes up with Ursula Hanson, a Spurbury dispatcher who dislikes her own department and is stuck at the front desk.

- Broken Lizard member Steve Lemme said the idea came from road-tripping to weddings in fellow member Jay Chandrasekhar's car and frequently getting pulled over by cops; as they were often under the influence of drugs, the gang began to wonder what would happen if the police knew and "had a sense of humor".
- Kevin Heffernan said the directors wanted Bill Murray for the role of Captain John O'Hagen and made his agent an offer of $100,000, but they pivoted to casting Brian Cox instead.
- The opening chase scene that ends at the Thin Queen Tavern was actually shot at The Golden Rail Ale House, a real bar in Newburgh, New York.
- The film made $60 million from VHS, DVD and Blu-ray rentals, and as of December 2006 another $10.6 million from sales.
- A sequel was funded partly through the crowdfunding site Indiegogo and released by Fox Searchlight Pictures on April 20, 2018, more than 17 years after the original film premiered, with most of the main cast returning.
