Plot summary
In Grantham County, Virginia, deputies find the intact body of an unidentified young woman half-buried in the basement of a home where several people were killed. The corpse goes to a morgue run by the coroner Tommy Tilden and his son Austin, and the sheriff needs a cause of death before morning. Austin sets aside plans with his girlfriend Emma and stays to help. Jane's waist shows years of corset wear, a fashion abandoned centuries ago. She has no rigor mortis and blood still flows in her veins, yet her eyes are cloudy. Her wrists and ankles are shattered, her tongue is gone, and her organs carry stab wounds. Jimsonweed, a paralyzing agent, sits in her stomach. The radio switches stations on its own.

- Although some prosthetics were used, the role of the corpse was for the most part played by actress Olwen Kelly. Øvredal felt an actress was necessary to connect the audience on a human level, and believed that doing some of the close-up scenes with a prosthetic would have been impossible.
- Kelly was the first person interviewed for the role, and although Øvredal said they performed further interviews afterward, he instantly knew she was right for it. One of the reasons she was selected was her knowledge of yoga, which helped her control her body and breathing.
