Plot summary
Georgie Gallagher is a gifted young footballer in 1984 Salford, living with Erica, his widowed mother. She wants him to attend the Lancashire Grammar School For Boys, where rugby is played and the strict Dr Farquar is in charge, and he sits an entrance exam for a scholarship there. At an open day he notices a junior football cup for Manchester teams, and decides to enter it. Lacking the twenty pounds required, he snatches a wallet from an elderly stranger, Sir Matt Busby. Busby and his friend Bob find the boy, see how well he plays, and Busby offers to coach Georgie's team if the theft stays quiet.
