While stealing from Berk's Squab Farm, Mr. Fox and Felicity, his wife, are trapped, and she tells him she is pregnant and asks him to find safer work. Twelve fox-years afterward the two and their son, Ash, live in a hole, and Mr. Fox relocates the household into a tree over the objections of his lawyer, Clive Badger. That tree sits near the land of three farmers, Walt Boggis, Nate Bunce and Frank Bean. Kristofferson Silverfox, Felicity's nephew, moves in while his father undergoes long treatment for double pneumonia. Restless for his thieving days, Mr. Fox and Kylie take poultry and cider from the farms. The three farmers want the raids stopped.

- Anderson chose to record the voices outside rather than in a studio, taking the cast into a forest, an attic, a stable and underground for some things, and said there was a great spontaneity in the recordings because of that; the voices were recorded before any animation was done.
- To capture an autumnal aesthetic, the color orange appears everywhere in the film: there is no frame in the whole picture that lacks it.
- After Anderson gave his acceptance speech, the audio of the speech was used in a short animation of Anderson's character, Weasel, giving the speech, animated by Payton Curtis, a key stop-motion animator on the film.
- Fantastic Mr. Fox received two Academy Award nominations, for Best Animated Feature and for Best Original Score, but it lost both of them to Up.
