Plot summary
Top secret experiments produced people known as viewers, who can enter another person's memories. John Washington, whose wife has recently died, works for Mindscape, a memory detective agency whose findings are not yet accepted as evidence in court. A session goes wrong and a stroke leaves him unable to work for two years. With his money gone, he keeps the beach house where his wife died. He asks his former superior Sebastian for a job. The case is Anna Greene, a brilliant, troubled sixteen-year-old who has stopped eating. Her stepfather wants her in a mental institution; her mother and Anna oppose it. John is assigned to end the hunger strike, and their sessions turn to Anna's years at a prestigious girls' school and the incidents there.
