Plot summary
Florence Nightingale is an aristocrat whose ideas about hospitals and the training of nurses put her at odds with Victorian society. She wants sanitation in hospitals improved and nursing established as a profession. When the Crimean War leaves wounded soldiers filling the hospitals at Scutari, she volunteers to go there and care for them. The people she finds in charge are not glad of her arrival, and she meets strong opposition to her way of working. The soldiers she tends come to call her the Lady with the Lamp, and it is said that they kiss her shadow as it passes.
