Plot summary
Mala is a Terrian teenager who lives on Terra, a planet whose ruling council forbids building new technology without its approval. She builds a telescope and watches a large object dim the sun from outside the city. Recon ships emerge from it and start abducting Terrians, some of whom go willingly, taking the visitors for gods. After her father Roven is taken, Mala lures a craft into a trap and brings it down, then pulls its pilot, Lieutenant James Stanton, from the wreck. Giddy, Jim's robot, warns that he cannot breathe the planet's air; Mala gathers plants and builds a tent around him. Giddy teaches her human language and tells her the humans live aboard the Ark, a generation ship searching for a new home. Mala agrees to repair Jim's damaged craft and travel with him to free Roven.
