Plot summary

Will is an engineer in London. Rosalind, his wife, is an artist with a following, and she has twin daughters of eight from before their marriage. Their son Amadeo is born in a difficult delivery, and the birth unsettles Rosalind. She leaves with the children and Candy, the young nanny who works for the household. A suitcase that has recently come from France holds faded photographic negatives, and Will believes it connects to her going. He sets out across Europe after them, and the trail leads to a house in Normandy that belonged to Rosalind's uncle, a photographer.
