Plot summary
Thirteen-year-old Kaitlyn is losing the only home she has known: her parents' marriage is coming apart and her mother is getting ready to sell the house in Portland. A colleague of her mother's from the police force gives Kaitlyn two breeding pigeons, but the gift does little to raise her spirits. She does begin learning how the birds are kept and raced, and that reading leads her to Jaan Vari, a breeder nearby who owns a valuable racing pigeon named Granger. Kaitlyn agrees when her best friend Adam proposes taking the bird, selling it, and using the money to pay off the mortgage on the family home.
