Plot summary
Frank Moses has left the CIA behind and shares a quiet life with Sarah Ross. Then Marvin Boggs arrives with news that Wikileaks has released files linking them to Operation Nightshade, a Cold War plan to smuggle a portable nuclear weapon into Russia. Agencies and contract killers around the world are now ordered to find them and learn where the device is hidden. Frank, Marvin and Sarah flee, flying to Paris to find an information dealer known as The Frog. Also after them are Victoria, a former ally whom MI6 has hired to eliminate the fugitives, the contract killer Han Cho-Bai, who seeks revenge on Frank, and the corrupt agent Jack Horton.

- The childhood photo of Han Cho-bai and his father shown in Red 2 is really Lee Byung-hun with his late father, who died in 2000; after Lee told director Dean Parisot his father had dreamed of being an actor, Parisot listed him in the end credits as one of the main cast.
- Anthony Hopkins was in line to play the villain Edward Bailey in Red 2, provided that a scheduling conflict with Thor: The Dark World could be worked out.
- Red 2 filmed in Montreal because Quebec offered a 25 percent tax credit and the city resembled its European settings, and the production also shot in London even though Montreal doubled for London in some scenes.
