Plot summary
Danny Flynn was nineteen when he went to prison in Belfast, leaving behind his family and his girlfriend, Maggie Hamill. He comes home fourteen years later, at thirty-two, and wants to live free of political violence. He finds his old trainer, Ike, and the two of them fix up an old gymnasium as a boxing club for boys, open to Catholics and Protestants. While working on the building Danny discovers explosives hidden beneath the stage and throws them into the river, which enrages Harry, a lieutenant among his former I.R.A. colleagues. Maggie is married to an imprisoned I.R.A. man and is expected to stay faithful to him. Her father, Joe Hamill, is the local I.R.A. commander and campaigns for peace, and he does not want her to take up with Danny again.
