Plot summary

In 1982, Sam Brenner, Will Cooper and Ludlow Lamonsoff play at an amusement arcade, and Brenner enters a video game championship with a Donkey Kong match against Eddie Plant. Footage of the event is sealed in a time capsule and launched into space. Decades on, Brenner works as an electronics installer and is called to the White House with Lieutenant Colonel Violet van Patten, where Cooper, now the president, shows him surveillance video of an attack on Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. Brenner recognizes the pattern of Galaga, though Admiral James Porter disputes that reading. Ludlow says the attackers are aliens who found the capsule and took it as a declaration of war, and who now challenge Earth to a three-match contest built from the championship's games, which they claim to have already won.
